When things are broken - it's important to fix them in the correct order

  • Broken cash flow;

  • Broken systems;

  • Broken people.

Which do you fix first?

  1. Fix the cash flow;

    1. you cannot tell your team, the bank, your creditors that "you'll fix the cash flow just as soon as you have fixed the systems/people."

    2. that probably means that you are going to have to step back into the middle of things and just sell some stuff;

    3. it may well hurt in the short term - be resilient;

    4. ethically get some cash in.

  2. Once you have fixed the cash flow, you can start fixing the people;

    1. there's no point in trying to fix the systems with broken people;

    2. that probably means that you are going to have to make some unpopular and/or difficult decisions;

    3. it may well hurt in the short term - be resilient;

    4. ethically get the right people on the bus;

  3. Finally, you can now fix the systems;

    1. you've got the cash and the people in place;

    2. it's now time to lead a manage the people you have chosen to fix the systems;

    3. it may well hurt in the short term - be resilient.
